LEESBURG

Police have arrested a fifth teen in the beating of two homeless men.

The latest suspect in custody is Brandon T. Mackey, 16, of Leesburg, who was arrested Monday on charges of attempted homicide in the attack July 7.

Six to eight suspects barged into an abandoned home where David Lambert, 46, and Robert "Glenn" Williams, 53, were staying and beat them on the head and upper body, the victims said in interviews with the Orlando Sentinel.

Williams was covered in blood when he crawled into the road outside the home on Picciola Road and flagged down a passing police officer. He suffered severe facial injuries and had trouble speaking for days after the attack.

Lambert had a punctured lung from a stab wound and required more than 100 staples to repair head injuries.

The youths planned the unprovoked attack on the transient men, Senior Detective Richard Giles said in an arrest affidavit.

Mackey is being held by the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The other four suspects, all from Leesburg, had a hearing Tuesday in juvenile court, where it was determined they will be tried as adults, police Maj. Steve Rockefeller said. They are Dominique Deloatch, 17; Marquis Duggs, 17; Gabriel McNeal, 16; and Aljanard "Al" Allen, 15.

The four were arrested on charges of attempted homicide, but their charges have been amended.

Duggs has now been charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder because the men were attacked with a bladed gardening tool, police said. The other three were charged with one count each of aggravated battery.

Rockefeller said officers do not anticipate making more arrests.
