Supreme Court Blocks Execution Of Fla. Child Killer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the execution of a convicted child killer.

The move by the high court was widely expected as it considers the appeals of two Kentucky inmates challenging the same lethal toxic three-drug combination used in Florida.

The stay was issued about four hours before Mark Schwab was scheduled to die for the 1991 kidnapping, rape and slaying of 11-year-old Junny Rios-Martinez. It will likely remain in effect until the Supreme Court rules on the Kentucky case.

The state won't be filing a challenge to the decision.

Vicki Rios-Martinez, the victim's mother, was unhappy with the Supreme Court's action and her family's 16-year wait for justice.

Schwab had a final visit with his mother Thursday, but refused to eat the final meal of bacon, eggs, sausage and hashbrowns that he had ordered.
