5 indicted in spree of South Florida killings and robberies

A Broward County grand jury has indicted five men in connection with a series of violent armed robberies, including two that left victims shot dead.

James Herard, 19, of Lauderhill, and Tharod Bell, 20, of Fort Lauderdale, were indicted for the murder of Kiem Huynh, 56, of Fort Lauderdale, after a Thanksgiving shooting at a Tamarac Dunkin' Donuts. Herard, Bell and a third suspect, Charles Faustin, 18, of Fort Lauderdale, also were indicted for murder in connection with the Nov. 14 shooting death of Eric Jean-Pierre, 39, in Lauderhill.

Prosecutor Peter Holden said it was too early to say whether the state would seek the death penalty for Herard, Bell and Faustin.

Also named in the indictment are Calvin Weatherspoon, 20, and Jonathan Jackson, 22, both of Lauderhill.

The five men, all of whom are being held in the Broward County Jail without bond, face multiple counts of robbery, battery and attempted murder.

The indictment that the grand jury handed up

Wednesday details 21 counts against the five men, including directing gang activities, racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering. They called themselves the "Bacc Street Crips" and embarked on a deliberate campaign of violent armed robberies, according to the indictment.

It says Bell, known in the gang as "Smoke," is the one who pulled the trigger on Jean-Pierre, while Herard, also called "J-Loc,"and Faustin, also called "Psycho," were accomplices who committed the crime with Bell to further their gang activities.

Herard is the one accused of shooting Huynh during the Thanksgiving Day robbery, with Bell listed as an accomplice to that murder.

The other gang nicknames were "Blu" for Jackson and "Slicc" for Weatherspoon, court papers say.
