Eight injured in US prison fight: report

Jan 25, 2009

MIAMI (AFP) — A melee inside a US federal prison has left eight inmates seriously injured with stab wounds and at least one gunshot wound, The Orlando Sentinel reported Monday.

The newspaper said the extent of the injuries at the high-security Coleman Federal Correctional Complex located northwest of Orlando was not immediately known.

But seven inmates were airlifted after Sunday's fight to Orlando Regional Medical Center's trauma unit, according to the report.

All of the injured inmates were under the watch of armed prison guards as authorities put the hospital's emergency room into "lockdown" while the injured were treated, The Sentinel said.

The fight broke out in the prison's recreation yard, according to the report.

No information was available about what led to the fight or how many inmates were involved in it, the paper said.
