Two Collier County sheriff’s deputies were fired in January and two others were placed on eight months of probation after one of the deputies choked two men who were handcuffed and in custody, and the others failed to prevent or stop the incidents and failed to report them in a timely manner.

The choking incidents occurred on back-to-back days on Sept. 1 and 2, a recently released internal investigation by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office revealed.

According to the report:

On both days Cpl. Sergio Covarrubias used unnecessary force by choking handcuffed inmates. Three other deputies witnessed the incidents and failed to stop them.

Covarrubias and Cpl. Roger Trudel were terminated in January, the Sheriff’s Office reported. Cpl. Jeff Wray and Cpl. Tom Corniola were placed on eight months probation and received letters of counseling. Wray was also suspended for two days without pay.
